Hours: Full-time, occasional evenings, and weekend work
Duration: 11 months (Grant-funded position)
Antelope Valley Partners for Health (AVPH) is seeking a motivated and organized Sports Coordinator to oversee and manage sports programs aimed at promoting community health and wellness in the Antelope Valley region. The Sports Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing sports activities, coordinating clinics, games and internal tournaments experiences, and engaging community members of youth ages in physical fitness initiatives. This position is grant-funded and has a duration of 11 months.
Experience & Requirements :
- Bachelor's degree in sports management, recreation, physical education, or related field preferred with at least one year of experience with organized sports with focus on youth sports and community outreach, or an AA degree with at least 2 years of direct experience in organized sports with focus on youth sports and at least one year of experience in community outreach.
- Previous experience in organizing and managing sports programs or events.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of sports rules and regulations across various sports (e.g., basketball, soccer, baseball, etc.).
- Ability to lead and motivate teams of volunteers and participants.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and sports management software is a plus.
- Must have previous experience in working with underserved communities in the Antelope Vally region.
- Bilingual preferred but not required.
- Maintain a valid California driver’s license.
- Must have automobile and maintain automobile insurance.
- Meet basic health and background check requirements and physical job standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Develop, plan, and coordinate sports programs and activities that align with AVPH's mission of promoting health and wellness.
- Organize and oversee sports clinics, games and internal tournaments experiences for youth age groups and various skill levels.
- Recruit, train, and supervise coaches, referees, and volunteers involved in sports programs.
- Collaborate with local schools, community centers, and organizations to promote participation in sports programs.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by implementing proper protocols and procedures.
- Assist in managing the program budgets, including equipment purchases, facility rentals, and other related expenses.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and participant feedback to continuously improve sports offerings.
- Assist in marketing and promoting sports programs to increase community engagement and participation.
- Maintain records, reports, and statistics related to sports programs and participants.
- Represent AVPH at community events and meetings to advocate for the importance of physical activity.

- Demonstrated knowledge of sports program development, including planning, organizing, and implementing activities such as leagues, tournaments, and clinics.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with participants, volunteers, staff, and community partners.
- Proven ability to lead and motivate teams, including coaches, referees, and volunteers, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and interact professionally with individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages.
- Understanding of safety protocols and procedures related to sports activities, ensuring the well-being and security of all participants.
- Capacity to identify challenges and develop effective solutions in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Exceptional organizational abilities with keen attention to detail, including managing budgets, schedules, and program logistics.
- Ability to promote community involvement and encourage participation in sports programs through outreach and marketing initiatives.
- Flexibility to adjust plans and activities based on participant needs, feedback, and external factors.
- Comfortable using computer software for program management, scheduling, and record-keeping (e.g., Microsoft Office suite, sports management software).
- Genuine interest in promoting physical fitness, health education, and wellness initiatives within the community.
- Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and organizational relationships.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of client and department information.
- Ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations.
- Safely and effectively uses all equipment necessary to carry out duties.
- Supports and adheres to the values and mission statement established by the AVPH Board of Directors.
- Ability to be culturally sensitive, tolerant, and non-judgmental.
Working Conditions :
- Primarily an outdoor sports field and office environment
- Ability to lift and carry sports equipment and materials (up to 50 pounds).
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate sports events and programs.
- Employee will be required to stand and sit, perform repetitive physical and mental activities, have face-to-face and telephone contact with individuals, work with others in a group or team, and work with external stakeholders or the public.
- Work may be performed under stressful and emotional conditions.
- COVID-19 vaccination card recommended.
