Job Description
The Shift Lead position is one of the most important positions in AVECCC hospitals. Our staff and veterinarians look to our shift leads as an example and are expected to set the tone of the hospital for each shift. Shift Leads are responsible for actively working to create a positive and safe working environment through regular check ins with their team, displaying consistently solution focused and positive attitude on the floor, and creating solutions as issues occur. Actively seeking out positive interactions with your team throughout your shift is required. Other duties include and are not limited to: managing the flow of the hospital, providing technical training to coaching staff members to better their technical and interpersonal skills, being an example on the floor at all times, maintaining positive and professional behavior, and providing high-quality customer service.
Schedule : Day shifts or Overnight
JOB REQUIREMENTS 1) Leads support staff of Technician Assistants, Kennel Technicians, and Certified Veterinary Technicians. a. Ensures:
i. Policies and procedures are being followed ii. A team environment is being fostered
iii. Positive and open communication is occurring
iv. Appropriate medical techniques are being utilized
v. Employees are demonstrating high quality customer service to all clients
vi. Provide feedback to the direct report if any corrective action or coaching is needed for
any employee
2) Works with the Hospital Manager and Technician Supervisor to determine staffing levels from shift to shift.
a. Assigns staff roles per shift
i. Reassigns duties as needed per the needs of the shift
b. Asks for additional help when warranted based on the call-in guidelines c. Sends staff home when not needed anymore
3) Participates in regular team meetings with Hospital Manager and Technician Supervisor to:
a. Identify areas for improvement within the Hospital.
b. Ensure consistent messages are being provided to employees c. Increase knowledge of supervisory skills
d. Develop a cohesive team
4) Assists with the orienting and training of employees
a. Assists with the on-boarding process of new hires
b. Assists with the advancement of existing employees
5) Establishes and reinforces a supportive team environment
a. Discourages negative attitudes, gossip b. Encourages and promotes positivity
i. Team Huddle
ii. Thanking co-workers at that moment
iii. Alerting management when someone goes above and beyond c. Has a can-do / will-do attitude
6) Assists with resolving client needs, concerns, and complaints.
7) Ensures a safe and clean working environment.
8) Assists with monitoring offices and hospital areas, and ensures compliance with duties. Notifies
Technician Supervisor if proper policies are not being followed or duties not being completed a. Lab
i. Equipment is properly maintained and we do not run out of supplies
b. Surgery
i. Equipment is properly maintained, we do not run out of supplies ii. Packs properly cleaned
iii. Properly stocked c. Radiology
i. Badges properly managed
ii. Log is updated after each shift iii. Clean and supplied
d. Equipment
i. Broken equipment is properly addressed
ii. Broken equipment is tracked and received back in a timely manner iii. Team members using equipment appropriately at all times
e. Isolation
i. Kept clean and stocked
ii. Equipment is properly maintained and functioning
9) Assists with auditing charts for missed charges and nursing notes are entered thoroughly, accurately and properly.
10) Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending CEs, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal and professional networks, etc.
11) Demonstrate proficiency in (but not limited to):
a. Venipuncture
b. Managing patients in all phases of anesthetic procedures.
c. Appropriate handling of sample collection, as well as using and maintaining laboratory equipment.
d. Safely and effectively obtaining diagnostic radiographic images as well as assisting in non- radiographic imaging procedures.
e. Administration of medications, fluids, and blood products.
f. Knowledge of animal handling/restraint.
g. Wound and bandage management.
h. Knowledge of pre-operative surgical procedures and circulating duties.
i. All aspects of patient care, with particular regard to emergency and critical care patients.
j. Appropriate sterilization techniques.
12) This is a full-time position, must work a minimum of 30 hours a week, no less than 3 shifts per week, and could be expected to be available to help on all shifts if needed.
13) Meeting attendance and participation (Shift Lead and Hospital meetings) is required on a weekly basis. In addition, emergent meetings and workshop attendance is expected above weekly meetings.
14) Shift Leads are expected to participate in On Call weeks on a rotation.
a. Taking call outs
b. Updating attendance tracker in real time.
c. Communicating schedule needs with relief team, staff
d. Open communication with the in-hospital leader/team impacted by the call outs.
15) Shift Leads will have their team surveyed quarterly in an effort to measure effectiveness and check in on the needs of the team.
