Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist - Clinical Research in Arthroplasty

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF invites motivated medical students and graduates to apply for a position as Junior, Assistant, or Associate Specialist in Clinical Research, focusing on arthroplasty.

This 12-month position offers the opportunity to conduct original research and contribute to advancements in adult reconstruction, particularly hip and knee arthroplasty, within a globally-recognized institution.

We particularly encourage applicants who are passionate about pursuing a career in clinical orthopaedic surgery. This role provides opportunities to specialize in several cutting-edge research areas including:

  • Innovative Surgical Techniques: Exploring advancements in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted arthroplasty procedures.
  • Health Disparities in Arthroplasty: Addressing inequities in access to surgical care, outcomes among underrepresented populations, and barriers to care delivery.
  • Economic Efficiency: Investigating cost-effectiveness of surgical techniques, resource utilization, and outcomes to enhance healthcare sustainability.
  • Technological Integration: Evaluating the role of wearable devices, AI-assisted diagnostics, and predictive analytics in patient care and surgical planning.
  • Global Perspectives: Collaborating on international studies that leverage insights from diverse healthcare systems, particularly in resource-limited settings.
  • Post-Surgical Outcomes and Rehabilitation: Developing protocols for improving recovery times, minimizing complications, and optimizing long-term joint function.Applicants will engage in multidisciplinary collaboration with leading surgeons, engineers, and health economists, contributing to UCSF's mission to advance orthopaedic care and research.

Core Research Activities:

  • Conducting literature reviews to identify knowledge gaps and formulate research questions.
  • Developing testable hypotheses.
  • Designing and conducting studies (prospective and retrospective).
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data using advanced statistical methods.
  • Preparing and submitting manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Presenting findings at academic conferences.
  • Contributing to grant applications for research funding.

Qualifications:

  • Junior Specialist: Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as biology, bioengineering, kinesiology, biomechanics, pre-medical studies, or a related discipline or have at least four years of research experience.
  • Assistant Specialist: Master's degree in a relevant field such as biology, bioengineering, kinesiology, biomechanics, pre-medical studies, or a related discipline or a baccalaureate degree in a relevant field such as biology, bioengineering, kinesiology, biomechanics, pre-medical studies, or a related discipline with three or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialist: Master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as biology, bioengineering, kinesiology, biomechanics, pre-medical studies, or a related discipline or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Applicant must have all requirements met by time of hire.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Experience:

  • Post-graduate training in orthopaedic research or related fields.
  • Experience with grant writing and overseeing research projects.
  • Familiarity with clinical trials and regulatory compliance.
