Intermediate Architectural Associate
ABOUT DJDS
DJDS is a non profit architecture and real estate development firm that innovates in and around the built environment to address the root causes of mass incarceration with a focus on restorative justice and restorative economics. To achieve this mission the team is comprised of architects, designers, real estate developers, operations/events production and community organizers within which the production designs and administrative lead is an integrated part of a multidisciplinary team. The unique position combines the technical skills of a designer with applications in community engagement to develop new project typologies including product development, game design, and regional planning and mapping.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Technical level, 5-7 years experience)
- Provide technical and design support on architectural, real estate development, and creative placemaking projects
- Prepare drawings and renderings
- Use all mechanical and computerized drafting tools and related software to plan the layout and design of projects
- Preparation of all related documentation and relevant code and regulatory analysis
- Coordinate with creative placemaking teams and community groups when planning for events and workshops
- Design and production documentation for product development
- Coordinate with fabricators on all production materials
- Support the real estate development team with proposals and reports
- Research products and processes and review relevant literature for projects
- Intern management (when relevant)
- Community engagement and public ambassadorship of DJDS (may include public speaking)
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested (the company reserves the right to add or change duties at any time)
- Utilize strong graphic and visualization skills to project conceptualization.
POSITION SUMMARY
(Expected duties of a Technical level position)
- Communicate necessary deadlines to stakeholders including outlines of solutions for delayed or missed deadlines.
- Monitor compliance of each project’s contractual obligations.
- Initiate, build and manage relationships with project partners and community stakeholders.
- Report regular updates to DJDS Leadership team.
- Mentor and guide other members of the team.
- Educate colleagues to elevate the team’s knowledge and skills.
- Coordinate efforts with all departments of the organization: design, real estate, advocacy, and community engagement.
- Attend and participate in thought leadership of DJDS prototypes and typologies, to include attending and speaking at relevant conferences and convenings
- Education in architecture, construction management, engineering, or related field
- Minimum five years industry experience (architecture or design)
- Proficiency in Sketch up, Rhino, AutoCad, and Adobe Acrobat Suite
- Working knowledge of REVIT preferred
- Basic understanding of building codes
- Advanced understanding and proficiency using Microsoft Office and Google Apps

- Appreciation for aesthetic design
- Undergraduate degree in business, urban planning, architecture or related fields required
