District 8 Community Organizer Job Description 

Location: Prince George’s County, Maryland 

Summary: Progressive Maryland was founded to empower communities to act for social and economic justice by developing leaders and cultivating allies in order to build a grassroots movement with the power to advance economic, racial, and environmental equity. We are made up of over 125,000 individual members and supporters and dozens of affiliated religious, community and labor organizations statewide. 

Community Organizer: Progressive Maryland is seeking a passionate and highly motivated individual to join our team as a District 8 Community Organizer. In this role, you will be the driving force behind engaging and mobilizing community members to actively participate in local initiatives and projects. Your responsibilities will include fostering strong relationships between the community, nonprofits, and the Prince George's County government, focusing on amplifying residents' voices and addressing their needs.

Responsibilities 

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, local organizations, and government officials to identify critical issues and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Act as a liaison between civil organizations, PTSAs, churches, and the District 8 office, leveraging support and promoting community engagement.
  • Develop and implement innovative strategies to engage and empower community members in decision-making processes.
  • Organize and facilitate community meetings, events, and workshops to promote dialogue, collective action, and resident participation.
  • Engage directly with the community through door-to-door outreach in District 8.
  • Mobilize residents around specific initiatives and county policies by providing transportation to council meetings and hosting town halls.
  • Conduct research and data analysis to gather insights on community needs and preferences, informing decision-making processes.
  • Advocate for the community's interests and concerns by representing them in meetings and public forums.
  • Collaborate with government agencies and other stakeholders to develop policies and programs that address community priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree or 1-3 years of proven experience in community organizing, preferably in a government setting.
  • Strong knowledge of local government processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate community meetings and workshops.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and research methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Passionate about community empowerment and social justice initiatives.

Travel: All positions require reliable access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license, laptop, phone, and willingness to travel throughout Prince George’s County (regularly) and elsewhere in Maryland (as needed). 

Salary, Benefits, and Position Details : Salary is commensurate with experience between $50,000-$65,000. This is a full-time, in-person role, requiring 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, with the expectation of occasional weekend and after-hours events. This is a one year contract position.
