Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking a Disability Support Services Counseling faculty member with fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) to fill a position beginning August 2024 . We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated counselor who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. Disability Support Services (DSS) Office works with students with diverse disabilities (college-wide) and promotes accessibility, equity and inclusion. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluates diagnostic documentation and intake information to determine eligibility for accommodations and services
  • Works with DSS Interpreter Coordinator to ensure students are coded correctly in order to provide interpreting services to Deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Works with DSS Interpreter Coordinator on determining and standardizing compensation and billing of interpreters
  • Works with DSS Interpreter Coordinator on Request for Proposals for multiple Interpreting Agencies
  • Determines and authorizes appropriate services/accommodations within the context of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and ADAAA, 2009
  • Maintains a caseload of approximately 120-150 students with a wide range of disabilities
  • Conducts initial intake interviews and maintains files to include case notes of ongoing contacts
  • Maintains liaison relationships with Montgomery County Public Schools, Department of Rehabilitation Services and other external agencies and medical/therapeutic providers to share information and referrals for students with disabilities
  • Maintains liaison and consultative relationship with teaching faculty and staff to ensure the provision of disability-related accommodations and to promote the understanding of disability-related issues
  • Counsels students on academic, career, social and personal issues.
  • Develops, implements and assesses retention strategies and educational plans for students with disabilities who are experiencing academic and completion difficulty.
  • Provides crisis intervention and follow-up.
  • Supports students with significant mental health needs referred via the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)
  • Teaches Student Success (STSU) courses such as First Year Seminar, Study Habits, Career Development, and/or develops/presents in-service training to MC faculty/staff.
  • Serves as a student advocate, as appropriate
  • Uses technology for case file management, advising, educational planning and teaching/learning resources.
  • Provides service to the College and community through active membership and leadership in division, campus, and College councils, committees or work groups.
  • Collaborates with college faculty, administrators, and staff to provide engaging, relevant and accessible student centered co-curricular support services.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience providing counseling services for people with disabilities in a secondary or post-secondary setting or a clinical setting including vocational rehabilitation.
  • Understanding and application of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Americans with Disabilities Act, as Amended, 2009 in a higher education setting.
  • Experience in crisis response/intervention.
  • Understanding of the availability and function of Assistive Technology.
  • Experience evaluating disability documentation to establish eligibility for and to determine appropriate services/accommodations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the array of clinical and social issues related to disability.
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least five years of experience as a disability support services counselor in higher education.
  • Eligibility to sit for appropriate licensing/credentialing exam.
  • Experience in threat assessment.
  • Understanding of issues related to transitioning and transfer.
  • Experience teaching Student Success courses.
  • Knowledge of community resources for individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience working with students of culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Experience supporting underprepared students.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the community college mission.

The hiring Range is $62,319 to $93,020, annually.
